Weekend prep roundup: Defensive tenacity fuels Southwest Christian boys, Windom Area girls

TYLER — Southwest Christian used a pestering defensive presence to win 71-52 over Russell-Tyler-Ruthton in a non-conference boys basketball game Saturday afternoon in Tyler.

Senior guard Jake Robinson hit a three-pointer for the Eagles at the halftime horn to give his team a 40-18 advantage. Nate Pfeifle led the team with 17 points while Jay DeBoer added 13 and Luke Nibbelink 10.

DeBoer also had eight rebounds and a pair of assists. Pfeifle had five rebounds. As the team’s floor general at point guard, senior Clayton Huisken had five assists, five rebounds and three steals.

Ellsworth 49, Harris-Lake Park 38

LAKE PARK, Iowa — Harris-Lake Park gave Ellsworth a run for its money, but the Panthers eventually prevailed and earned a 49-38 win over the Wolves and improved to 16-5 on the season. H-LP dropped to 9-8 overall.

Drew Cheskie put up 16 points for Ellsworth, Mitch Leuthold added 14 and Justin Kruse 12. Jordan Kyle led H-LP with 12 points and six rebounds while Cole Bosma tacked on 10 for the Wolves.

Fairmont 75, Luverne 59

LUVERNE — Fairmont seniors Mitch Pfingsten and Jay Ruen each scored 20 points to lift their own team over Luverne in a battle of Cardinals.

Josh Eversman added 14 points for Fairmont. Luverne’s Blake Ziegler (15), Josh Slieter (14) and Nicholas Overgaard (10) led their team in scoring.

Luverne fell to 3-15 with the loss and Fairmont is 17-3.

St. James 72, Jackson County Central 66

ST. JAMES — Jackson County Central couldn’t get over the hump in a closely contested game at St. James.

Trailing by 10 points at halftime, the Huskies cut the game to five points early on after the break. Zach Brandts led St. James with 26 points and Walker Froehling added 11.

Jon Harmening led JCC with 25 points and 15 rebounds. Darnell Taylor-Breck had 14 points and six assists while Bodey Behrends added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

JCC is now 11-8 and remains 5-4 in the Southwest Conference.

Central Lyon 68, Trinity Christian 61

HULL, Iowa — Central Lyon held an edge after each quarter on its way to victory over Trinity Christian.

The Lions had Nic Lutmer (29), Grant Metzger (17) and CJ Roths (13) each score double digits. Roths handed out 10 assists and Kalen Eckenrod led the team with seven rebounds.

Trinity Christian had Greg Gritters, Collin Heynen and Jesse Teunissen with 11 apiece.

Windom Area 66, Montevideo 61

MONTEVIDEO — Windom Area played better defense and rebounded well in the second half to rally past Montevideo on a weekend road trip.

Rachel Sorensen scored 17 points to lead the Eagles, who are now 11-5 on the season.

TYLER —Southwest Minnesota Christian arose from a halftime hole to dig out of and defeat Russell-Tyler-Ruthton on the road.

Senior forward Tianna Top led the Eagles with 19 points, five blocks and a dozen rebounds. Junior guard Savannah Tinklenberg added 15 points and 10 boards. Sophomore forward Kassydi Vreeman also scored 15.

Sibley-Ocheyedan 64, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 45

SIBLEY, Iowa —Sibley-Ocheyedan (12-6, 10-5 in the Siouxland Conference) continued its winning ways in girls basketball with a win over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn.

Generals senior Bridget Doeden scored 28 points for her team and added four assists, three steals and eight rebounds. Senior Jenifer Willemssen had 16 rebounds with eight points and Kayla Ackerman scored nine points, reined in six rebounds and dished out four assists.

Harris-Lake Park 62, Ellsworth 47

LAKE PARK, Iowa — Harris-Lake Park led throughout its game with visiting Ellsworth, leading 18-6 following the first quarter and 36-15 at halftime.

Senior post Noreen Morrow paced the hometown Wolves with 23 points and Miranda Brueggeman posted 10.

Girls hockey

Luverne 5, St. Peter/L-H 1

LeSUEUR — Luverne posted a win in its final regular season girls hockey contest at St. Peter/LeSueur-Henderson Saturday.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the contest before St. Peter scored its goal. Luverne finishes the regular season at 21-3.

Madisyn Dingmann scored two goals for Luverne and Madison Crabtree, Makayla Sterrett and Macy Walgrave scored the others. Kennedy Gonnerman saved 14 of 15 shots faced in net for the Cards.

Boys hockey

Luverne 3, Dodge County 1

KASSON — Luverne completed its stellar boys hockey regular season with a 3-1 triumph on the road over Dodge County.

The Southwest Conference champion Cardinals (20-0-1) put all three of their goals on the board in the first period. Junior forward Andrew Verhey scored the first goal off of assists by sophomore Chaz Smedsrud and eighth-grader Jaxon Nelson. Logan Norman then scored off of assists credited to junior Toby Sengvongxay and Jordan Dingmann before Nelson scored the third from assists by sophomore Eric Tofteland and senior Kendall Meyer.

Worthington and Pipestone Area at MCW/Fairmont Tourney

SHERBURN — Pipestone Area put together 127.5 team points to finish behind Minneota and Blue Earth Area at the Red Bull Invitational. Worthington, with six placewinners of its own and 97 points, placed fifth.

Pipestone Area’s Garrett Ploeger (120) and Brady Bos (152) were champions for the Arrows and Michael Suda (113), Will Smith (170), Blake Wolters (220) and Derik Evans (285) were all runners-up. Allan Hchman placed third at 160 and Walter Kor ended in fourth place at 145.

For Worthington, Anthony Luft was champion at 126 pounds and Carson Hagen won the 195-pound bracket. Hser Eh Pwae took second at 106, Nic Putnam was third at 182, Hser Moo Pwae was fourth at 113 and Vince Riley was fourth at 152.

Adrian at Woodbury Central Dual Tourney

MOVILLE, Iowa — The Adrian Dragons, currently rated sixth in Minnesota’s Class A, finished a perfect 4-0 on their day at the Woodbury Central Dual Tournament.

The team defeated Bennington, Neb., 40-24, Fremont Bergan, Neb. 72-9, Sioux City North, Iowa, 55-18, and Woodbury Central, Iowa, 54-27.

Skylar Heironimus (106), Ryan Elias (120), Tony Lynn (138), Jesse Slater (170) and Ben Taracena (182) all made it through the day unscathed at 4-0.

The Dragons finish their regular season with a record of 26-5.

JCC at Mike Fascnacht Memorial Tourney

WATERVILLE — Jackson County Central, ranked fourth in Class A, put a good day of wrestling together and put five individuals in the championships at the Mike Fascnacht Memorial Wrestling Touranment.

Jordan Biehn (126), Paden Moore (152), Luke Norland (160) and Keegan Moore (170) were each winners for the Huskies. Daulton Wagner placed second at 113.

Jackson County Central is 16-4 in team duals entering a trip Thursday to Luverne. JCC closes its dual season at Sibley East Friday night. in non-conference action.
