Boys basketball: Ellsworth rolls, Sampson scores 1,000th for Southwest Christian


HILLS — The Ellsworth Panthers rained three-point shots in the first half, then rained some more in the second half as they beat Red Rock Conference foe Hills-Beaver Creek 71-36 in boys basketball action Thursday night.

The Panthers hit seven of 13 three-pointers in the first half while moving out to a 41-22 lead at intermission. They had 11 threes for the game, on 23 attempts.

Justin Kruse scored 19 points, Johnathon Kramer added 13, and Mitch Leuthold had 11 for Ellsworth. Dylan Gehrke scored 16 points to lead Hills-Beaver Creek.

The win puts Ellsworth at 17-6 overall and 11-4 in the conference while dropping H-BC to 7-11 and 6-7.

SW Christian 80, SWU 66

OKABENA — Senior post Leighton Sampson scored his 1,000th point for Southwest Christian.

With four players scoring in double figures, Southwest Christian found what it took to earn a road win over Southwestern United.

Leighton Sampson paced his Eagles with 26 points while Nate Pfeifle added 16, Jake Robinson 14 and Luke Nibblelink 13. Clayton Huisken handed out seven assists and Jay DeBoer collected a team-best 13 rebounds.

Aaron Fest scored 25 points to lead the Wildcats. Trey Cranston posted 15, Isaac Fest 12 and Brandon Thurk 10.

MLA 68, Fulda 49

FULDA — Visiting Mountain Lake Area broke open a close game in the latter stages, advancing to 19-1 on the season while dropping Fulda to 2-18. Mountain Lake Area led by less than 10 with about seven minutes to go before the Wolverines bumped up the margin.

Carter Kirk led the winners with 16 points while Josh Grev had 14 and Andrew Hempeck 10.

For Fulda, Josh Ramerth led with 22 points. Brian Fenske had seven points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists.

Fulda hit respectably from the field, 19 for 49. Mountain Lake Area converted 27 of 61 field goals helped along by a strong offensive rebounding effort.

SLAYTON — Jumping out to a 33-16 halftime lead, the Murray County Central Rebels held on to defeat Westbrook-Walnut Grove.

Grant Everson led the winners with 14 points while teammates Jach Ostman and Grant Rohrer had 13 apiece and Logan Kluis 10. Rohrer also had 12 rebounds.

Alex Knutson scored 22 points for W-WG. Charger Shane Buchman added 14 along with eight rebounds. Knutson had four assists.

Both teams are now 7-6 in the Red Rock Conference.

EDGERTON —Red Rock Central picked up its first win of the season, on the road at Edgerton.

Falcons junior guard Tom Blomgren led all scorers with 18 points while handing out six assists. Austin Price, a senior forward, added 15 while Luke Engen put up 11 and Trevor Peterson 10. Peterson had 12 rebounds.

Wyatt Butson led the Flying Dutchmen with 16 points and four assists, Austin Mertens scored 12 and Nate Paulsen dished out four assists. Mertens had 16 boards.

TRACY — Overcoming a three-point first half deficit, Canby outscored Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 43-30 in the second half to clinch a 10-point victory.

Josh Gallegos led the winners with 22 points and Michael Slaba had 20. Zach Nuy added 17 and McKinley Johansen 15. Gallegos had 11 rebounds.

Slaba and Johansen had five assists apiece.

For Tracy-Milroy-Balaton, Josh Kirk scored 24, Spencer Smith 20 and Brett Swenhaugen 12. Riley Kirk had six assists.

BLUE EARTH — Senior forward Luke Monson scored 22 points to lead Blue Earth Area over Windom Area.
