Boys hockey: Luverne hockey team sits at 24-0-1 with Friday win
PLYMOUTH — Luverne topped off its boys hockey regular season with a 6-2 victory Friday evening at Providence Academy.
Playing well, especially in the game’s first two periods, the Cardinals posted a 5-0 lead and pieced together 35 shots in all against Providence’s 18.
Sophomore forward Chaz Smedsrud had a hat trick for the Cardinals while junior defenseman Toby Sengvongxay scored two more and senior Gunnar Olson another.
Two assists each were credited to Jaxon Nelson and Logan Nelson while Travis Frakes, Andrew Verhey and Smedsrud each dished one out.
Now 24-0-1 entering the playoffs, Luverne received Section 3A’s top seed. The same happened last year before the Cardinals were upset by Marshall in the section semifinals. The winner of a game Tuesday between eighth-seeded Morris-Benson Area and ninth-seeded Fairmont meets Luverne Thursday night.
"We hope we’ve learned our lessons from last year," Luverne head coach Derrick Brown said as his team readies for postseason hockey. "Hopefully we know what it takes to be the No. 1 seed and we put three games together."
