Iowa wrestling: CL/G-LR’s McIntire to wrestle for title

DES MOINES — Central Lyon/George-Little Rock junior Colby McIntire will wrestle tonight for a state championship, after Friday’s competition at the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

McIntire decisioned Iowa Valley junior Drake Healey in the championship quarterfinals and defeated Wilton junior Logan Mays in the semifinals. His opponent for tonight is Lisbon sophomore Carter Happel, who is unscathed on the year after wins over Alburnett junior Hunter Washburn and South Hamilton, Jewell junior JD Rader on Friday.

At 120 pounds, Lions freshman Mitch Van Beek lost his first match Friday and saw his season come to an end. At 220 pounds, junior Travis VanderStreek will wrestle AGWSR junior Clay Meinders for a trip to the third-place bout after a win on the consolation side of competition over Alburnett junior Robbie Carrothers.

Sibley-Ocheyedan sophomore Kyle Green dropped his first match Friday by 12-2 major decision to Sumner-Fredericksburg junior Blake Meyer, ending his season. At 138 pounds, Generals freshman Garrett Sayler’s season ended with a 15-0 loss by technical at 3:04 to Mount Ayr senior Erik Freed.

Wrestling begins today at 10 a.m. with the Class 2A, 3A and 1A consolation semifinals and finals. The championship finals will be wrestled beginning at 6 p.m.
