Iowa boys basketball: George-Little Rock, H-LP boys drop close postseason games

HULL, Iowa — Seasons came to a conclusion for the George-Little Rock and Harris-Lake Park boys basketball teams Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A, District 2 tournament. George-Little Rock lost a one-point game to top-seeded Graettinger-Terril-Ruthven-Ayrshire, 62-61. And Harris-Lake Park was bounced 58-46 by Boyden-Hull.

Down 41-29 at halftime, the Mustangs battled back in the second half to where they led by a point with about 30 seconds left in the game. But GTRA pushed the ball inside to its big man, Connor Sturgill, who scored near the basket to give his team a 62-61 lead. That’s where it stayed, as George-Little Rock’s Tanner Ver Steeg attempted a shot behind the three-point line that bounced on the rim three times and did not go in.

“The kids battled to the end, battled hard, but just came up short,” said G-LR head coach Curt Schilling.

Ver Steeg led Mustang scorers with 21 points and teammate Jesse Koerselman contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds.

For the Titans, Sturgill scored 19 points, Andy Geelan 17 and Noah Stuckey 13.

Boyden-Hull 58, H-LP 46

Harris-Lake Park had a good first quarter, leading by one. Boyden-Hull led by five at halftime and by nine after three. But it wasn’t over yet.

Early in the fourth quarter B-H held an 11-point advantage, but the Wolves went on a 9-0 spurt on three unanswered three-point shots. The Comets maintained their composure, however, and won the game.

“It was kind of a game of runs,” said H-LP head coach Jeff Sohn.

A key factor to the eventual outcome was the excellent job Boyden-Hull did defensively on H-LP point guard Brady Van Iperen, who was harassed throughout.

Jordan Kyle led H-LP (12-11) with 12 points and teammate Dahlton Burdoff added 11 points. Cole Bosma had six rebounds and three assists while Kyle and Skylar Cudmore had five rebounds apiece.

Dalton Moser with 21 points and Justin Schmidt with 19 paced Boyden-Hull.
