3AA boys basketball: Arrows, T-M-B are among first-round winners

PIPESTONE — The Pipestone Area Arrows advanced in the section 3AA boys basketball tournament with their 74-56 win over BOLD.

Justin Rops scored 22 points to lead the Arrows and Collin Moeller added 20. Boyer Bouman and Brayden Baartman added 11 apiece.

Trent Athmann had 19 for the Warriors and Nick Kubesh scored 11.

T-M-B 58, Montevideo 49

MONTEVIDEO — Seventh-seeded Tracy-Milroy-Balaton pulled off an upset over the second-seeded Montevideo Thunder Hawks.

The Panthers were led by Spencer Smith’s 19 points and 13 rebounds. Brett Swenhaugen added 12 points and eight rebounds. Josh Kirk added 12 points and Brady Lanoue 10. Riley Kirk had five assists.

Troy Diggins scored 18 for Montevideo and was his team’s only player in double figures.

With T-M-B’s victory they advance to take on Minneota/Lincoln-HI Tuesday in Montevideo.

Jackson County Central 68, MCW 53

JACKSON — Jon Harmening had another stellar night for the Jackson County Central Huskies en route to a Section 3AA tournament victory.

Harmening scored 24 points and grabbed 18 boards. Zach Schwarting added 18 points. Brady Place passed out five assists to go with 12 points. Darnell Taylor-Breck did a little bit of everything, having six points, eight rebounds, and six assists.

Sophomore Richard Eckmann hit five threes for 15 points. Jake Sinn added 12.

JCC will take on St. James Area on Tuesday in Windom.

St. James Area 69, Windom Area 58

ST. JAMES — St. James Area used a second-half spurt to defeat Windom Area in an opening round contest on its home floor.

The Eagles held a 10-point edge, at 49-39, with just over nine minutes to go. St. James finally seized the lead at 57-54 with just under 5:30 to play. The Saints hit four three-pointers late to get the lead and the win.

St. James moved to 20-5 overall and will meet Jackson County Central Tuesday in Windom. Last time the Saints played the Huskies, they won, 72-66. JCC has won six out of its last seven games.

Fairmont 79, Luverne 47

FAIRMONT — The Luverne Cardinals saw their season come to a close as they fell to top-seeded Fairmont Saturday night.

Mitch Fingsten had 20 points for Fairmont as he also pestered the Luverne ball-handlers all night and gained five steals. Josh Eversman dumped in 18 points while Jay Ruen scored 10.

Josh Sleiter and Nicholas Overgaard scored 11 apiece for Luverne. Luverne was kept off the free throw line by Fairmont, who committed only 10 fouls, resulting in only 13 free-throw attempts.

Fairmont will face Blue Earth Area on Tuesday in Windom.
