Prep tennis: Luverne and Worthington win easily
LUVERNE — Defending section champion Luverne rolled past Southwest Conference opponent Pipestone Area 7-0 in high school tennis Friday, winning every match in straight sets and not losing more than three games in any set.
Jonny Vajgrt beat Trace Lueck 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Andrew Jelken beat Nathan Baatz 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2, Erik Wohnoutka beat Jared Carlson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and Jacob Jarchow beat Tyl Woelber 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4.
In doubles action, Luverne’s Blake Ziegler and Cory Stroeh topped Pipestone Area’s Bill Smith and Chandler Haag 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1. At second doubles Hunter Robinson and Chris Jelken defeated Alex Abrahamson and Elijah Everson 6-0, 6-0. And at No. 3 doubles, Toby Sengvongxay and Dalton Schoeneman were 6-2, 6-1 winners over Tyse Woelber and Tiston Polls.
CLARA CITY — The Worthington Trojans improved to 3-1 overall with a convincing 7-0 victory over Southwest Conference opponent MACCRAY.
Carter Lindner won 6-0, 6-3 over Connor Hagemeyer at No. 1 singles. Andrew Johnson beat Skylar Garman 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Ben Doeden defeated Jordan Caskey 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. And Nick Newman downed MACCRAY’s Treston Dobmeier 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
In doubles, the Trojans’ Isaac Houselog and Levi Blanchard upended MACCRAY’s Nathan Eisenmerger and Josh Harguth 6-4, 6-1. Bryan Doeden and Jonah McDonald beat Ben Burger and Levi Sparks 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. And the Trojans’ No. 3 doubles team of B.J. Berger and Sebastian Licea beat Alex Spence and Chris Preuss 6-1, 6-0.
In junior varsity competition, Worthington’s Brandon Harberts won his match 6-0, Orissa Nitibhon won his match 6-0 and Jordan Jenson also won 6-0.
The Trojans will have a big test waiting for them next week when they travel to play Luverne on Tuesday.
