High school golf: Competition tough in Marshall


MARSHALL — The Worthington boys and girls golf teams ran up against some tough competition Saturday in the Marshall Invitational.

Both Trojan squads placed sixth in an event that featured eight teams.

The Worthington boys placed sixth out of eight teams, with 346 strokes. Marshall placed first with 296, ahead of Mankato East (310) and New Ulm (316) to round out the top three. On the girls’ side, the Marshall black team scored 350, followed by Mankato East 389, New Ulm 420, Mankato West 436, Marshall Orange 444 and Worthington 451.

Will Mulder led the Worthington boys with an 18-hole total of 84 strokes. Jaren Solt carded an 86, Tyler Van Hove 87, Jake Weg 89, Nathoe Vorasane 96 and Logan Ellenbecker 98.

Tyree Murray finished with identical rounds of 54 strokes for 108 to lead the Worthington girls. Teammates Selina Hua had 112, Becca Christensen 114, Ashley Hoefker 117 and Kelicy Anderson 145.

Unity Christian Invite

The Luverne boys placed sixth among 10 teams at the Unity Christian Invitational, won by Western Christian with 326 strokes.

Luverne shot a 349.

Chaz Smedsrud carded an 18-hole total of 85 strokes to lead LHS. Blake Stegenga and Spencer Riphagen each carded 87 for the Cardinals. Teammate Cole Walgrave had a 90.
