Boys tennis: Luverne tames Trojans


LUVERNE — The defending Section 3A champion hosted a dangerous Worthington team Tuesday in high school tennis, and the host team won, 5-2.

The squads split singles events and Luverne won all three doubles contests.

Jonny Vajgrt won No. 1 singles for Luverne, 6-4, 6-2 over Worthington’s Carter Lindner. Luverne’s Erik Wohnoutka defeated Ben Doeden 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Worthington’s singles victories came at the No. 2 spot with Andrew Johnson beating Andrew Jelken 6-2, 6-2 and at No. 4 with Nick Newman dumping Jacob Jarchow 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.

At No. 1 doubles Blake Ziegler and Corey Stroeh beat Isaac Houselog and Levi Blanchard 6-1, 6-2. At No. 2, Hunter Robinson and Chris Jelken topped Bryan Doeden and Jonah McDonald 6-1, 6-0. At No. 3, Toby Sengvongxay and Dalton Schoeneman beat Sebastian Licea and D.J. Berger 6-2, 6-1. And at No. 4, Isaac Gillette and Tanner Baustian defeated Brandon Harberts and Orissa Nitibhon 6-3.

“I think we could have got another one out of this,” said WHS head coach Mike Marquardt. “But they are solid. We’ll make some changes and I think we can get this thing turned around.”

In JV matches, Worthington’s Porter Elsing and Nic Putman lost 7-5, Leo Duarte and Ernst Coriolan won 7-6 (7-5), Smile Bu and Pokwa Aaw won 6-1, Anwar Farra and Nate Gustaf lost 6-2, Kyle Janssen and Carter Ponto lost 6-2, Blaine Doeden and Ryan Newman won 6-1, Ler So and Zach Clark won 6-3 and Max Langerud and Alex Cuate lost 6-1.
