Prep softball: Windom Area takes fourth at home

WINDOM — Windom Area finished in fourth place at its own tournament Saturday when it finished the day 1-2.

The Eagles’ day started with a tough 11-10 loss at the hands of Martin County West. The recovered with an 8-2 victory over Madelia-Truman but saw the day end in disappointment with an 8-5 loss to Fairmont.

In the opener, the home team got out to a strong start before MCW put together a six-run second to take the lead. Windom was never quite able to overcome the early deficit as it dropped the one-run ballgame.

Kelly Riordan took the loss in the circle, allowing eight earned runs on 13 hits while striking out five. Sutton Dewanz went 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs for the Eagles with Madison Maras finishing 1-for-2 with two runs. Jordan Gregory got the win for the Mavericks.

Despite a two-run top of the first for Madelia-Truman, the Eagles were able to pull ahead and never looked back en route to their lone win of the day.

Meghan Vesey was lethal in the pitching circle as the Jayhawks struggled to figure her out all day. She finished the contest with one earned runs on seven scattered hits and three strikeouts in the win. Megan Theesfeld drove in four runs for Windom during a 2-for-4 game at the plate to which she added a double and a triple. Alyssa Fest contributed a pair of doubles and an RBI to the cause.

In the third-place game against Fairmont, the Eagles got out to a 3-1 lead after two innings; but the Cardinals came back with two in the third to knot it up. It was the first of four straight innings with at least one run for Fairmont.

Vesey allowed two earned on nine hits while striking out three during six innings of work. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with Kaylee Janssen going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Adrian finished the day 1-2 as well and took fifth place. The Dragons won the fifth-place game against M-T, 8-5 after losing to Fairmont and Mankato Loyola.
