Top dazzles in sweep of SWU
OKABENA — If pitching and defense is the key to success in softball, Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian should be in pretty good shape.
Tianna Top pitched all 14 innings for the Flying Dutchmen Thursday during their doubleheader against Southwestern United and allowed no runs on five hits, struck out 11 and walked one. Behind her, the defense didn’t commit a single error. That paved the way to wins of 4-0 and 6-0 to keep their undefeated mark intact as they improved to 11-0 overall and 9-0 in the conference.
In the opener, E/SWC put up two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to come away with a 4-0 Red Rock Conference win in the opener. Savanah Tinklenburg and Jenny Nelson were both 2-for-4 with Nelson adding an RBI. Courtney Jouwstra was also 1-for-3 with a ribbie. Top allowed just three hits and struck out three.
On the losing end of a defensive battle was SWU’s Ida Rogers-Fergusen. She also pitched all seven and surrendered eight hits while striking out seven. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
With Rogers-Fergusen still in the circle, the Flying Dutchmen bats got rolling in the nightcap; slamming 15 hits. On the other end, the Wildcats managed only two against Top as she struck out eight during her second shutout of the evening.
Breanna Nelson led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Jouwstra was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in with Tinklenburg driving in two during a 2-for-4 performance. Rogers-Fergusen had both hits for SWU.
