Prep tennis: Luverne battles with Sioux Falls Lincoln's JV

SIOUX FALLS — In a showdown that Luverne head coach Greg Antoine called “one of the best matches of the year,” the Luverne Cardinals boys tennis team defeated Sioux Falls Lincoln JV 7-2 Tuesday.

“Every match was full of good tennis points and great tennis rallies,” Antoine said.

Jonny Vajgrt faced two grueling sets with Lincoln’s Dylan Wald at No. 1 singles, but Vajgrt prevailed in the end, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

At No. 2 singles the Cardinals’ Andrew Jelken was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Graham Leonard.

Luverne also took third and fourth singles. Erik Wohnoutka defeated Akshay Choudry 6-1, 6-1 and Blake Ziegler topped Thomas Beck 1-6, 6-4, 10-6 in a super-tiebreaker.

Lincoln’s Tommy Jensen beat Cory Stroeh 6-0, 6-2 at fifth singles and teammate Carter Haugan beat Hunter Robinson 6-4, 6-3 at sixth singles.

In No. 1 doubles, Vajgrt and Wohnoutka won 6-2, 6-3. Ziegler and Stroeh won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles. And Robinson and Jelken won 1-6, 6-3, 10-7 super-tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles.

Luverne is 14-2 on the season with sectional seeding taking place today in Marshall.
