Prep tennis: Luverne sweeps Blue Earth Area

BLUE EARTH — It hasn’t often happened this spring when the Luverne Cardinals boys tennis team had a real match on its hands.

Thursday was no different as the Cards swept past host Blue Earth Area 7-0.

“We are peaking at the right time with sections starting on Monday,” said LHS head coach Greg Antoine.

It would seem so. Luverne improved to 15-2 with Thursday’s result.

At No. 1 singles, Jonny Vajgrt defeated Hunter Meyers 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Andrew Jelken tipped Leon Chaudhan 6-3, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Erik Wohnoutka eased by Chandler Kienitz 6-1, 6-1. And at No. 4, the Cards’ Isaac Gillette had no trouble with the Bucs’ Parker Kienitz, 6-3, 6-1.

Luverne’s No. 1 doubles team of Blake Ziegler and Cory Stroeh won 6-0, 6-1 over Jaron King and Martin Giranados. Hunter Robinson and Chris Jelken won 6-0, 6-0 over Justus Thelen and Spencer Peterson at No. 2 doubles. And in the third spot, the Cardinals’ Toby Sengvongxay and Dalton Schoeneman won 6-1, 6-1 over Mason Henn and Spenser Timmerman.

Luverne will play MACCRAY at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Luverne. Semifinals and finals are set for Tuesday, with semifinals due to begin at noon.
