Iowa baseball: Harris-Lake Park wins wild opener

HARTLEY, Iowa — In what turned out to be a wild season-opener, Harris-Lake Park held on to pick up the victory.

The Wolves trailed Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn by five entering the final frame, only to catch fire at the plate and eventually go up by two. The Hawks got one back, but H-LP reliever Braeton Nitschke got out of the inning to preserve an 8-7 win.

H-M-S scored a pair of runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings to carry a comfortable 6-1 lead into the seventh. That’s when the Wolves plated seven to go up 8-6. The Hawks came back with one but couldn’t quite complete the comeback and H-LP opened its season with a victory.

Nitschke went two innings and allowed three hits while striking out one in relief of starter Brady Van Iperen. Evan Metzler took the loss for the Hawks.

Tanner Green finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and two runs. Jordan Kyle added a pair of hits himself.

H-LP (1-0 overall) opens its home schedule at 6 p.m. today against Remsen St. Mary’s in Lake Park.
