Section 3A golf: MCC boys, Windom Area girls win state berths

MARSHALL — Grant Everson led his Murray County Central boys golf team back to the state tournament on Wednesday, and the Windom Area girls also qualified from the Section 3A tournament in Marshall.

Everson struck an 18-hole total of 77 strokes as the MCC boys carded a 342 team score, just three strokes better than second place Windom Area’s 345.

On the girls’ side, Westbrook-Walnut Grove’s Abby Herding came into the clubhouse with a medalist’s round of 83. As a team, the Windom Area girls turned in a solid victory with 364 strokes compared to runnerup Minneota/Lincoln HI’s 381.

The MCC boys and the Windom Area girls will compete in the state Class A tournament at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker June 10-11. Every member of the first-place teams, plus the top five individuals not on the winning team, also qualify for state.

Joining Everson at the state meet will be MCC teammates Adam Christensen, Jaden Boerboom, Tyler Groves, Brad Schreiber and Jack Pierson. Other boy golfers going to state will be Ben Henning of Adrian, Kyle Antes and Dylan Pigman of Windom Area, and Jeremy Alsaker and Hunter Burns of Russell-Tyler-Ruthton.

Henning was just one stroke off Everson’s pace, with a 78. Christensen finished third with 80, followed by Antes (81), Alsaker and Pigman, both with 84s, and Burns (86). Burns parred the first hole to win a four-way playoff for the last state berth with Jeff Gladis of Minneota/Lincoln HI, Clay Salzwedel of Southwestern United and Devin Skalak of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton.

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton placed third in the boys team standings with a 365. Minneota/Lincoln HI had 370.
