Iowa softball: Sheldon continues to roll

SHELDON, Iowa — Sheldon has gotten off to a hot start to its 2014 summer and Monday it continued to roll.

The Orabs scored 13 runs while pitcher Sami Kleinwolterink scattered seven hits but allowed just one run in a 13-1 Siouxland Conference blowout over MOC-Floyd Valley.

Sheldon got things going right away in the home half of the first. Caitlin Cain led off the inning with a bunt single. She stole second and moved up to third on a passed ball before Mackensey Radke slapped a single to put the Orabs on top 1-0. Kleinwolterink added a bases loaded single to drive Radke in before Kati Kneifl and Sydney Iedema drove in a run each to put Sheldon up 4-0 at the end of the first.

Dutchmen pitcher Emily McDonald clamped down in the second, but a two-run homer off the bat of Krista Bousema in the third extended the lead to 9-0. Cain and Bryn Groff both scored on a passed ball to bring the game to its run-rule final in the bottom of the fourth.

Radke finished the night 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Orabs. Bousema was 2-for-3 with a pair batted in and two more scored with Cain going 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. In all, the top three places in Sheldon’s order went 7-for-10 with six RBIs and seven runs scored.

Kleinwolterink allowed just one earned run on seven hits and struck out one. McDonald took the loss for MOC-FV.
