VFW Baseball: Worthington splits road doubleheader

MARSHALL — It was an up-and-down night for Worthington Monday in its road doubleheader against Marshall.

After a trio of pitchers put together a stellar performance in the opener to lead it to a 6-1 win, four errors led to three unearned runs for Marshall Orange in the nightcap as Worthington dropped a tough, 4-3 decision.

In game one, Jed Jewett, Shawn Hurley and Brian Morales combined to allow just one hit over seven innings.

Worthington put up a pair of runs in both the first and sixth innings to bolster a strong performance.

Jewett got the win, allowing one earned run on one hit and striking out four. Hurley and Morales combined to throw a nearly perfect four innings. The only baserunner for Marshall came on a Hurley walk.

Jewett finished 2-for-4 with an RBI while Ethan Sauerbrei went 2-for-4 with one run scored and another driven in.

In game two, Worthington committed four errors. All of those came in the third inning and opened the door to a three-run inning for Marshall.

Still, Orange needed a run in the bottom of the sixth to close out the win.

Morales got the loss, allowing one run on one hit in two innings. Manuel Dominguez was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Sauerbrei was 2-for-3 with a run scored with Kasey Solma going 1-for-2.
