Prep boys soccer: Worthington buries Marshall

MARSHALL — Sophomore Ivan Rodriguez scored three goals and four other teammates had two apiece as the Worthington Trojans boys soccer team dominated host Marshall 12-0 on Tuesday.

The Trojans scored three goals in the first half and nine more in the second to improve to 1-2 on the season.

Angel Sanchez, Anthony Sanchez, Andrew Johnson and Jesus Ordaz all had two goals for Worthington.

Angel Sanchez scored the first two goals of the game and Anthony Sanchez scored the third goal.

Johnson opened the second half with his first goal, and then came the onslaught.

Jose Bahena and Rodriguez each had a pair of assists. Angel Sanchez and Ordaz had one each.

WHS head coach Smitty Ektnitphong wsa unable to attend Tuesday’s game, but the report he received afterward was well received.

“Hopefully they can keep the momentum. We’ve got some tough games on the road for the next two weeks,” he told the Daily Globe. “We’ve gotta try to be positive. Hopefully we have some momentum.”

The Trojans, who’ve already faced a pair of tough opponents early in the 2014 season, do indeed have some tough ones up ahead. On Thursday, they’re on the road to play arch-rival Southwest Christian. They return home Saturday against Loyola, then go on the road again to play St. Peter, New Ulm and Mankato West.

Ektnitphong remains confident in his team. “I really feel that in our conference, in our section, we can compete with anybody,” he said Tuesday night.
