Prep girls tennis: Fairmont aces Worthington netters

FAIRMONT — Host Fairmont didn’t allow a third set Tuesday in a 7-0 sweep of Worthington in high school girls tennis action.

Seniors Sophie Shelgren of Fairmont and Emily Williamson of Worthington squared off in No. 1 singles, with Shelgren winning 6-3, 6-3.

At No. 2 singles competition, Abby Fitzgerald beat the Trojans’ Kristy Workman 6-0, 6-0. At No. 3, Ellie Tonder topped Kelli Newman 6-0, 6-1. And at No. 4 singles, Leah Fortune defeated the Trojans’ Coral Owens 6-4, 6-3.

Some of the doubles matches were more competitive on paper.

Worthington’s No. 3 doubles duo of Theresa Biber and Sophia Ringsman were defeated 6-4, 6-4 by Fairmont’s Kaitlyn Cihoski and Brittany Bass. The No. 2 doubles team of Paige Stewart and Erika Schutte lost another tight battle to the Cardinals, 6-4, 7-5, at the hands of Hayley Folgelson and Morgan Cihoski.

At No. 1 doubles, Fairmont’s Lauren Carlson and Shantel Quist beat Worthington’s Brianna Kempema and Annie Lesnar 6-1, 6-4.
