High school sports roundup: Swanson, Whitehead, Gatchay are sharp in Rebel Relays
SLAYTON -- Ethan Swanson won two events for host Murray County Central and teammates Mason Whitehead and Garhok Gatchay also won a pair at the Rebel Relays track and field meet Thursday.
Swanson captured the boys 100-meter race in 11.86 and the 400 meters in 55.15. Whitehead was a winner in the 300-meter hurdles (44.68) and the discus (113-11). Gatchay went 5-6 to win the high jump and also took the triple jump in 40-03.
On the girls’ side, the Canby Lancers won 13 events led by Emily Gillingham who won the 400 meters in 1:06.46 while taking part in two victorious relay teams, the 4x400 (4:34.22) and the 4x800 (10:40.42).
The Windom Area boys got wins from Jae Carlson in the 800-meter run (2:19.53), John Irwin in the 1,600 meters (4:50.51), Nickolas Green in the 3,200 meters (10:49.26) and Yanick Tade in the pole vault (10-0).
Shiro Ogeka of Windom Area won the 100-meter girls race in 14.48. Teammate Delaney Smith captured the shot put with a 37-0 throw, and another Eagle, Lindsay Muller, went 7-0 to win the pole vault.
Ogeka was second in two other individual events, the long jump and triple jump.

WINDOM -- Eighth-grader Ellie Maricle led Windom Area to an 11-1 five-inning win over Adrian to move the Eagles to 7-1 on the 2017 fast-pitch softball season.
Maricle went 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs, and she hit a two-run home run in the second inning. She also was the winning pitcher, going the full five innings on a three-hitter. She walked one and struck out three.
Avery Balster took the loss.
Maurissa Issacs and Halle Jackson each had a pair of hits for Windom Area, and Jackson drove in a run. Daytona Smedsrud doubled and drove in two runs.
Devin Dreesen and Kristina Cauwels both doubled for Adrian.

MOUNTAIN LAKE -- After an 0-3 start, Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey continues to head in the right direction.
The Wolverines won their fourth consecutive game Thursday as starting pitcher Molly Carnell threw a five-hitter against Madelia/Truman. She didn’t walk a batter, struck out three, and allowed just one earned run.
Freshman Margo Stoesz had three of MLA/C’s seven hits off three Madelia/Truman pitchers. Lexi Toll had two hits.

LUVERNE -- Luverne split a doubleheader with St. James, winning the first game 10-0 and losing the nightcap 9-5.
In Game 1, Rylee Olson earned the victory, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out four.
Ashton Krueger had three hits -- including a double -- for the Cardinals, while Zayna Hustoft, Ariel DeBeer and Katie Kracht each had a double. Gracie Bosch had a triple and drove in three runs.
In Game 2, Luverne committed six errors, which led to three unearned runs.
Olson was 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles, while DeBeer had three hits, one of which was a double. Kracht had two hits and drove in two runs.
The Cardinals (3-4) are at Adrian Area today.

WINDOM -- For one of southwest Minnesota’s most enduring sports rivalries, it’s only fitting that Jackson County Central and Windom Area played a 1-0 game. The visiting Huskies scored the game’s only run in the top of the sixth inning on an unearned run.
Noah Kloss, Chase Voxland and Luke Gilbertson all saw mound duty for Windom Area. Ryan Christopher, Keegan Klontz and Chris Gumto pitched for JCC.
There were few scoring opportunities for either team in the game. Jackson County Central went down in order in three innings and never advanced a runner as far as third base outside the sixth inning. Windom Area went down in order in every inning but the first and never advanced a runner as far as second base.
Christopher -- who had eight strikeouts in four innings -- scored JCC’s lone run. Easton Bahr, Ryker Vanderwoude and Carter Heinrichs had hits for the Huskies, while Luke Gilbertson had a hit for the Eagles.

ADRIAN -- For four innings, Adrian and Murray County Central were locked in a scoreless tie.
But the Dragons too advantage of a pair of Rebel errors in the fifth en route to a victory.
Jake Stamer earned the victory for Adrian as he allowed no runs on three hits and had seven strikeouts. Mitchell Wagner threw an inning and recorded two strikeouts.
Kellan Johnson suffered the loss for the Rebels. He allowed one earned run on four hits and had six strikeouts.
Zach Hendel had a two-run double in the fifth inning, while Zack Loosbrock had two hits, including an RBI double. Alex Loosbrock added a double for Adrian (5-1, 4-0).
Nate Everson, Brady Kremer and Spencer Wajer each had a hit for MCC.

MOUNTAIN LAKE -- Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove put five runs on the board in the second inning as it defeated Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey 12-0 in five innings.
Mitchell Willhite pitched the first two innings and earned the win for RRC/W-WG. Skyler Reddeman and Austin Irlbeck also pitched.
Cole Pankonin was 3-for-4 for RRC/W-WG (3-1), while Corey Maras was 3-for-3 and Taylor Bunting was 3-for-3.
Sam Grev and Drake Harder had hits for MLA/C (2-5).

LUVERNE -- The host Luverne boys easily defeated Hills-Beaver Creek 184-214 as Carter Stemper stroked a co-medalist round of 43 strokes.
The Patriots’ Preston Maassen also had a 43.
Coy Gonnerman had a 44 and Aleck Schoeneman a 46. Max Skattum, Jack Golla and Will Stegenga each had 51 strokes.
Dylon Taubert had 53 and Thomas Dysthe 57 for H-BC, and Orvil Swenson was next with 61.
Both girls teams were incomplete. Tess Van Maanen and Hannah Fick had 53 and 57 strokes for the Pats, and Carly Serie and Zoey Sandbulte carded 61 and 68 for Luverne.Fulda triangular
FULDA -- The Fulda girls golf team finished first at the Fulda triangular scoring 211 to top Adrian (229) and Edgerton/Southwest Christian 273. The Fulda boys also took first, scoring 174, finished ahead of Edgerton/Southwest Christian’s 187 and Adrian’s 210.
Lynneigh Vrooman shot a 48 for the Raider, while Amber Breuker scored 53, Tayler Warborg scored 54 and Emily Schroer scored 56.
Alexia Kemper earned medalist honors for Adrian, shooting a 47. Gracia Elias scored a 57, Annika Elias scored 60, Josi Altman scored 65.
Ella Fondberg scored 52 for E/SWC and Jennifer Schelhaas scored 55.
On the boys side, Fulda’s Cory Renneke earned medalist honors shooting a 41. Aron Hulstein scored 42, Payton Marquardt scored 45 and Joe Fischer scored 46.
Wesley Vis scored 44 for E/SWC, while Jeremy Vander Woude scored 45, Derek Fey scored 49 and Josh Kreun scored 49.
Brady Henning scored 47 for Adrian, while Mitchell Veld scored 52, Landon Runia scored 53 and Josh Christians scored 58.
