Track and field: Luverne girls win Big South title

PIPESTONE -- The Luverne girls track and field team captured four relays, and Michelle Neece of Pipestone Area won four individual events Saturday at the Big South Conference track and field meet.

The LHS girls took the 4x100 in 52.72, the 4x200 (1:50.63), 4x400 (4:17.04) and 4x800 (10:20.33). Neece won the 100-meter dash in 12.99, also winning the 200 meters (26.82), 100-meter hurdles (15.40) and long jump (17-00).

Luverne scored 180 points in the small school girls division, followed by Pipestone Area with 112, Windom Area 95, Redwood Valley 93.5, Blue Earth Area 93, Jackson County Central 81.5 and St. James Area 39. Fairmont won the big school girls crown with 153 points. Next was Waseca 151.5, Marshall 146.5, St. Peter 102.5, New Ulm 79.5 and Worthington 54.

In the small school boys division, Redwood Valley scored 126.5 points to eclipse Jackson County Central 121, Blue Earth Area 112, Pipestone Area 110, Luverne 88, Windom Area 70 and St. James Area 67.5. Marshall was the big school boys winner with 181.5 points, followed by Fairmont with 170, Waseca 126.5, Worthington 98, New Ulm 83 and St. Peter 51.

Worthington had many second-place finishes to go along with the first-place boys 4x800-meter relay team. On the boys' side, Adam Koller was second in the 3200-meter run (10:14.44), Obang Ojulu was second in both the 110-meter hurdles (15.52) and the 300-meter hurdles (41.16), Bruce Olsen was second in both the shot put (43-6) and discus (136-11), and the WHS boys 4x200-meter relay team took home a second in 1:36.63.

The Trojans' Taylor Eggers was second in the girls 100-meter dash (12.96) and 200-meter dash (26.36). Teammate Emma Thuringer was second in the long jump (14-10.75) and the WHS girls 4x200-meter relay team ran 1:51.08 for second place in that event.
