Girls basketball: WHS dumps Luverne, Marshall devours WA

LUVERNE — A late first-half spurt by the Worthington Trojans did the trick, as they pulled away from Luverne in a girls basketball contest played Thursday evening at Luverne.

The Cardinals played right with the Trojans for awhile, but thanks to a tightened defensive effort, an alert effort on the offensive glass and easy buckets that transpired on the other end for the visitors, Worthington eventually outlasted Luverne, 66-43.

Worthington held a 33-14 lead at halftime and worked on fine-tuning several facets of their game plan through the balance of the night. Nine players found their way into the scoring column for the team.

Sophomore guard Morgan Haugen led the Cardinals with 14 points and Tara Sudenga hit three three-pointers for nine points. Worthington had senior post Brooke Henning (16 points, seven rebounds) and point guard Abbie Landgaard (11 points, four assists) carrying the biggest scoring load. Junior forward Ana Boever scored nine points and senior forward Paige Gravenhof put up eight.

Worthington outrebounded Luverne 28-18 in the game and spread the ball around offensively for a sum of 21 assists. Luverne coughed up 25 turnovers in the game and had had only 11 assists.

Worthington travels for a pivotal game Saturday evening in Marshall. The Tigers are unbeaten in conference play and handed Worthington its only loss of the season — by a 75-55 final score — on Thursday, Dec. 12 at WHS. Redwood Valley hosts Luverne tonight.

“We’re happy anytime we can win,” Trojans head coach Eric Lindner said following the Luverne decision. “With Marshall, you could be up by two and then all of a sudden down by 12. They play a lot of kids off the bench and we’ll have to make sure we’re physically ready for that.

“We want to know where we’re at,” Lindner added of Saturday’s matchup. “I’m excited for the game so that we can gauge where we’re at.”
