State wrestling: Championship final matches are set

ST. PAUL — At the conclusion of the state wrestling semifinals at the Xcel Energy Center, the tournament's championship final matches are set.

Six area wrestlers will vie for state championships tonight, including five in Class A and one in Class AA.

In the Class AA semifinals, Worthington senior Anthony Luft turned his opponent, Tyler Funk of Foley, for a two-point near fall with time expiring in their match. On the opposite side of the bracket, Simley senior Cortez Arredondo won a 3-2 decision over Totino Grace's Christian Bahl and will oppose Luft for a state title.

In Class A's semifinals, Adrian sophomore Skylar Hieronimus won a 9-2 decision in the semifinals to meet Minneota's Brock Buysse in the championship bout. Buysse beat Crosby-Ironton's Caleb Kreitter by 2-1 decision in the semifinals.

Wabasso/Red Rock Central's Spencer Jenniges kept a perfect record intact, moving to 40-0 with a 5-3 decision over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle's Miguel Ambris at 120 pounds. Border West junior Cameron Sykora, also unbeaten on the year, won a 10-1 major decision in the semifinals and will face Jenniges for the championship.

At 170 pounds, Jackson County Central sophomore Keegan Moore popped off the whistle at the onset of the second period to put in a takedown and a pin against Border West's Austin Maanum. Moore advances to meet Minnewaska Area senior Ryan Stottler (33-1) in the championship bout.

Windom/Mountain Lake senior Vince Johnson (27-5) defeated West Central/Ashby/Evansville's Hunter Fick by 4-3 decision in the semifinal round at 195 pounds. On the other side, Sibley East senior Nathan Rose won a 4-3 decision to get to the finals. Johnson will meet Rose tonight for the state title.

At heavyweight, Wabasso/RRC's Alex Schroepfer took just 51 seconds to pin his semifinals opponent. It was the third fall in a row for Schroepfer at state. Schroepfer will wrestle United North Central senior Taylor Carlson (34-2) in the championship match.

Several wrestlers remain on the consolation side of the bracket this afternoon. This evening's session begins at 4:30 p.m. with third and fifth place matches. The championship matches will follow at approximately 7 p.m.

Fifteen will medal at the state tournament

A total of 15 of the area's approximately 28 state wrestling qualifiers will receive medals at the tournament.

Wrestling for third place will be Windom/Mountain Lake's Jared Willaby (132), Jackson County Central's Paden Moore (152) and Luke Norland (160) and Adrian's Jesse Slater (170).

Going for fifth place are Pipestone Area's Michael Suda at 113 pounds, Jackson Couty Central's Jordan Biehn at 126 and Brady Boss of Pipestone Area at 152.
