Letter: Proposed economic solutions won't help
The current deficit reduction plan is political suicide. I'm not sure anyone will step up to bat. It may never get off the ground. Why don't we just pass the hat around in Washington? I suggest Congress start panning for gold. Many of the proposed ideas will slow down the economy....

As others see it: Financial overhaul is necessary
The idea of good government is to always be moving forward, improving upon the foundation that has been laid by predecessors, not to tear down what was done. That seems to be the case with congressional Republicans who would repeal health care reform if they win the U.S. House. They...

Letter: Made in America? Good luck
I find it hard to believe that there are people who think our president should be able to create jobs for them. I have for years purchased Mason shoes, which are made in China. I bought a Skil drill -- that's made in China. I wanted to buy an American camera -- Kodak -- but it's...

Column: A jobs strategy both parties can agree on
WASHINGTON -- We're nearly three years into the recession -- and our economy still shows few signs of life. The Department of Labor just announced that the country shed 131,000 jobs in July. Unemployment now stands at 9.5 percent. It's not surprising that Democrats and Republicans...

Column: Renewable energy can be the source of jobs
It's certainly no secret - the economy needs jobs, especially in rural Minnesota. There is a source of jobs which could help. Those jobs come from renewable energy: solar electric, solar hot water, solar hot air, and wind. These new technologies work, especially in the rural areas...

As others see it: Work force needs immigrants
The warning is not new: With the retirement of baby boomers, we will face a worker and skills shortage. But while the ready remedies -- retention, recruitment and training -- are part of the equation, they don't speak to another threat we must face. State Demographer Tom Gillaspy...

As others see it: Recovery act gives a boost
A report released Wednesday by the Council of Economic Advisers to the president should dispel any criticism that the $862 billion federal economic stimulus package -- the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act -- isn't doing any good. The report finds that the Recovery Act is already...

Editorial: Take new deficit news seriously
There has been a fair share of disappointing news on the economics front over the past couple of days. A brief recap: * Minnesota's overall tax collections for the just-completed fiscal year were $99 million, or 0.7 percent less than forecast. "State officials say there's no reason...

As others see it: House votes for needed Wall Street makeover
The U.S. House took important steps Tuesday night by passing legislation to reform Wall Street so as to prevent the same circumstances that set up the Great Recession of the past few years. Reigning in big banks and their ability to make risky investments will protect the consumer...
