SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa — Polaris Industries will stop making its Victory motorcycles so it can focus on its Indian Motorcycle brand and other products. Polaris announced Monday that it is shutting down the unprofitable Victory brand after 18 years. The motorcycles were produced at the Minneapolis-based company's Spirit Lake and Spearfish, S.D., plants. The company decided that its Indian Motorcycle brand has better growth prospects, Polaris CEO Scott Wine said.
DES MOINES, Iowa — It may seem odd for the governor of a lightly populated agricultural state to be chosen as U.S. ambassador to China, especially amid escalating talk of a trade war with the major U.S. trading partner. But Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad boasts a 30-year relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the most powerful Chinese leader in decades.
DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Democrats nominated Patty Judge on Tuesday to challenge Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, opting for a former lieutenant governor with a fitting name to make the case that the longtime Republican senator overreached by refusing hearings for President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee.
ST. PAUL — Minnesota’s turkey and chicken farms are mostly back to full production after last year’s bird flu outbreak devastated more than 100 poultry operations in the state. The state announced its first case of the H5N2 strain of avian flu in March 2015 and confirmed its last case last June. Minnesota Public Radio News reported there haven’t been any new cases of bird flu in the state since then.
DES MOINES, Iowa — In the U.S. Senate, there have been few things as certain in Iowa politics over the past six decades as Grassley winning elections. The Senate judiciary chairman, who now ranks fourth in seniority in the chamber, hasn’t lost an election since his first run for state Legislature in 1958. However, Democrats think they might have a chance at unseating him this time, largely because of his refusal to hold confirmation hearings for President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland.

DES MOINES, Iowa — One of the nation’s largest egg farms, which lost millions of hens in last year’s bird flu outbreak, is defending itself against legal action by the state over a wastewater spill that fouled 18 miles of stream in northwest Iowa and killed 163,000 fish. The Environmental Protection Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to refer Sunrise Farms to the attorney general for enforcement of violations of state laws and administrative regulations. The company owns 23 egg-laying barns near Harris designed to hold up to 8 million hens.
