SIOUX VALLEY — Memorial Day activities are scheduled to take place Monday in Sioux Valley. The Sioux Valley American Legion will host a 10 a.m. service at Sioux Valley Cemetery. An 11 a.m. program will take place at Trinity Lutheran Church. Featured speaker will be U.S. Navy Cmdr. O-5 BJ Garms. A potluck meal will follow the program.

LUVERNE -- Ethan Swanson of Murray County Central won three events in the Section 3 Sub-Section Southwest track and field meet on Thursday. Swanson won the 100-meter race in 11.48, the 200 meters in 23.07 and cleared 18-11 in the long jump. On the girls’ side, Southwest Christian/Edgerton got another fine performance from Chantel Groen, who won the 200-meter race in 27.33 and cleared 17-0 in the long jump.

NORTH MANKATO -- Odds were fairly stacked against the Worthington Trojans Thursday in the Section 2AAA softball tournament. But the odds never said the Trojans couldn’t play with grit and enthusiasm.
WORTHINGTON: A Memorial Day program will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Chautauqua Park, with visits at 8:30 a.m. to Garden of Memories; 9:30 a.m. to Worthington Cemetery; and 10 a.m. to Freedom Veterans Memorial Park. ADRIAN: Memorial Day services will take place at 9:30 a.m. Monday in the Adrian Cemetery and 10 a.m. Monday at St. Adrian Catholic Cemetery. Msgr. Rick Colletti will be the speaker. REDWOOD FALLS -- Worthington High School singles player Blaine Doeden won his first match Thursday at the Section 3A individual boys tennis tournament. Doeden, a sophomore who held down the Trojans’ No. 1 singles spot for 2017, defeated Cole Onken of Pipestone Area 6-0, 6-2 at Redwood Falls. In his next match, however, Doeden was beaten in a three setter, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 by Ryan Borstad of Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd.
LAKE CRYSTAL -- Visiting Jackson County Central clobbered Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 8-0 in high school basebal action Thursday as five pitchers combined on a four-hitter. Dylan Svoboda pitched two innings and was credited with the win. LCWM advanced a runner as far as third base in the fourth inning, but otherwise never advanced anyone past first. BUFFALO LAKE -- Nick Weg shot a 78, helping the Worthington Trojans advance in the Section 3AA boys high school golf tournament on Thursday at Oakdale Golf Club in Buffalo Lake. The Trojans finished fourth on Day 1 of the tournament, allowing them to qualify as a team for Day 2 on Tuesday, again at Oakdale. The top five teams advanced.

My parents would tell me of times when the storms were so bad and the pheasants so thick you could pluck them out of the trees by hand and harvest them for dinners to be held at a later date.
