WORTHINGTON — Employees at the Daily Globe are in the midst of preparations for the newspaper’s conversion to a twice-weekly printed publication. Following the Wednesday, May 31, edition, the next print publication date will be Saturday, June 3. The newspaper, which will then become known as The Globe, will publish print editions each Wednesday and Saturday moving forward.
REDWOOD FALLS -- The Luverne Cardinals, who for years has been the definition of exceptional boys tennis in southwest Minnesota, has qualified once again for the state Class A high school tournament. Coach Greg Antoine’s Cards defeated Montevideo 4-3 in the semifinals of the Section 3A tournament Wednesday at Redwood Falls, then carried the day 5-2 against top-seeded Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd in the championship match.
PIPESTONE -- As expected, the Pipestone Area Arrows looked every bit like the No. 1 seed they are Wednesday in the first round of the Section 3AA girls softball tournament. After Jackson County Central outplayed Luverne 5-2 in a 4 p.m. game, the Arrows thrashed JCC 15-0 in four innings in the next contest as pitcher Shelby Bloemendaal fired a no-hitter.
BUFFALO LAKE -- Worthington Trojans Anneke Weg, Madelyn Odell and Bailey Weg advanced Wednesday at the Section 3AA girls high school golf competition at Oakdale Golf Club, and Luverne advanced as a team. The top five teams and 15 other individuals move on from Wednesday’s first day to the second and final day May 30. Top golfers then earn the right to compete in the state tournament.
OCHEYEDAN, Iowa — Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Master Chief Petty Officer (retired) Tony Stoecker will be the guest speaker at the Ocheyedan Township Cemetery’s Memorial Day program Monday. Stoecker was born in Worthington, grew up in Hartford, S.D., and now resides in Ocheyedan with his wife, Marina. During his military career, he earned the meritorious service medal, four Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medals, three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medals and various unit and campaign awards.
LAKE SHETEK — National Get Outdoors Day will be observed on June 10. Minnesota's 76 state parks and recreation areas are offering free admission on this day, and many of them have planned special activities to introduce people to geocaching, kayaking, camping and other family-friendly activities.
WORTHINGTON — The 31st annual Great Gobbler Golf Tournament, hosted by King Turkey Day Inc., is scheduled for June 7 at GreatLife Worthington. A shot-gun start for the 18-hole scramble event will be at 1 p.m. Teams will consist of four people each, with fees including golf cart and meal. There will be a blind flight, and payout for first and second per flight.
WORTHINGTON — City and rural mail carriers collected 1,485 pounds of donations in food during its annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive May 13. The Worthington Post Office thanks its customers for the donations of non-perishable food items. All donations collected are delivered to the local food shelves.
