BY AARON HAGEN The Globe BUFFALO LAKE -- Being a high school math teacher, John Koller is pretty good with numbers. So during the final round of Section 3AA golf tournament on Tuesday, Koller knew his Worthington boys golf team was in a close battle with hard-charging New Ulm.
WORTHINGTON -- Minnesota West pitcher Eric Alicea was named to the NJCAA Division III All-American Team on the third team. Alicea was 11-0 for the Bluejays, tying another DIII player for the most wins in the nation. He set an MW record with 91 strikeouts. He was Top 10 in the country in strikeouts, earned run average, and strikeouts-per-nine innings pitched. A freshman from Puerto Rico, he will return to the Bluejays as a sophomore.
WORTHINGTON -- The Worthington Storm 12-and-under and 14-and-under softball teams both swept doubleheaders on Tuesday. The 14U team defeated Tracy 12-6 and 17-7, while the 12U team defeated Windom Gold 15-3 in both games. Taylor Ponto pitched the first game for the 14Us, with seven strikeouts. Faith Kazemba and Amber Ruthenbeck were both 2-for-2. Sophie Wietzema and Madison Johnson each hit home runs.
Worthington’s Tucker Sorenson, Easton Sauerbrei, and Shawn Hurley were named to the 2017 All-Big South Conference big-school baseball team, while Logan Huisman and Tyler Linder are honorable mentions. Jackson County Central led all small-school teams with six all-conference players. Luverne has three, Pipestone Area has two, and Windom Area has two. JORDAN -- A walk-off bases-loaded walk sealed the deal for Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove as it defeated Fosston 11-1 in six innings in the first round of the Minnesota Class A state baseball tournament on Thursday at the Mini Met in Jordan. Corey Maras drew the bases-loaded walk to push in Evan Blomgren and take the win via 10-run rule.
BECKER -- Westbrook-Walnut Grove stands in eighth place with a score of 358 after the first day of the Minnesota boys Class A state golf meet on Tuesday at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker. The tournament concludes after the second round today. Mahnomen Waubun leads the pack with a 316, while Sleepy Eye United is second (330), Mounds Park Academy is third (331), Lac qui Parle Valley is fourth (334), Mesabi East is fifth (339), Blooming Prairie is sixth (348), and Ottertail Central is seventh (348).
LAMBERTON -- Red Rock Central High School in Lamberton will host the second-annual Buffalo Ridge Shootout boys basketball tournament featuring a number of local area varsity basketball teams on Thursday, June 29.
Three players from the Section 3A champion Luverne boys tennis team were named to the All-Big South Conference team. Cardinals Chris Jelken, Mark Robinson, Layne Curtis and Cade VerSteeg all earned all-conference honors, while Jim Erickson, Eric Gillette and Dalton Schoeneman were honorable mentions. Worthington’s Blaine Doeden was the lone Trojan selected. The full all-conference team is:
Worthington softball players Christina Shorter and Liz Hayenga were named to the All-Big South Conference Big Division team, and Sydney Ponto was an honorable mention. Five Pipestone Area players were named all-conference in the small division, including Shelby Bloemendaal, Logan Winter, Taylor Nesvold, Rachel Skyberg, and Mandi Miller..
WORTHINGTON -- The Worthington Cubs dropped a pair of amateur baseball games this weekend to Fairmont and Pipestone. Fairmont defeated Worthington 11-1 in eight innings in Fairmont on Saturday, while Pipestone defeated the Cubs 11-4 at Worthington Middle School on Sunday. Tucker Sorenson drove in Marcus Maras for the Cubs’ only run and had two of the team’s four hits against Fairmont. Fairmont pitcher Tyler Tennyson threw all eight innings with 10 strikeouts and no walks.
