ONAMIA—A 22-year-old Sandstone man faces murder charges in connection with the stabbing death of a 45-year-old Onamia man in Mille Lacs County in east-central Minnesota.. Matthew Scott Smith appeared Wednesday, Aug. 22, in Mille Lacs County District Court in Milaca for a bail hearing. Bail was set at $600,000 without conditions and $300,000 with conditions. He faces second-degree intentional murder, second-degree murder without intent and third-degree murder while perpetrating an eminently dangerous act with a depraved mind.

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — A 57-year-old man died early Monday, Aug. 20, after being struck by a train in Detroit Lakes. Emergency dispatchers received a report at about 12:15 a.m. Monday that a southbound Canadian Pacific Railway train had struck a pedestrian at a railroad crossing at Willow Street, according to a news release from the Detroit Lakes Police Department.
THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. — A man who spent time in prison for attempted murder was arrested here Tuesday, Aug. 14, on accusations he beat a man with a souvenir baseball bat and cooler. Jerry Andrew Redden, 27, of Thief River Falls could face up to seven years in prison and a $14,000 fine.
MOORHEAD — The woman who co-founded the iconic Moorhead Dairy Queen and had a hand in creating the world-famous Dilly Bar has died. Phyllis Litherland died Sunday, Aug. 12, in her daughter’s home in Chicago at the age of 90. Phyllis and Bob Litherland established the downtown Moorhead Dairy Queen in 1949, among the franchise’s earliest restaurants in the nation. The couple is also often credited for the creation of the Dilly Bar.
MOORHEAD, Minn. – A 25-year-old man is accused of stealing items from the campus of Minnesota State University Moorhead when he was reportedly a student there. Jeremy Lafromboise is charged with receiving stolen property and second-degree burglary of a government or school building, both felonies.
THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. — A Thief River Falls man was arrested Wednesday, Aug. 8, for stabbing a coworker in the neck, according to court records. Louis Damian Cruz Montanez, 26, was charged with attempted murder and assault with a weapon. If convicted, he could spend up to 20 years in prison and pay a $20,000 fine. Police were called Wednesday to Northern Pride, 419 Pennington Ave. S. in Thief River Falls. An affidavit for Cruz Montanez's arrest said he got into a fight with another man in the locker room. The man allegedly swung a box fan at Cruz Montanez.
BRANDON, Minn. -- A six-vehicle crash on Interstate 94 near Alexandria in western Minnesota in a construction zone Monday, Aug. 14, sent three people to the hospital. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the extent of injuries is unknown but it is believed that none of the injuries were serious. A State Patrol spokesman did not know how many passengers were involved.
