SLAYTON -- Like any boating excursion, it took a while to get the passengers loaded, but big smiles were on the faces of both guests and volunteers. As the first pontoon pulled away from the dock, the guests let go of the strings they were holding and a flurry of red, white and blue balloons filled the sky. A second pontoon followed the first, and a second flurry of balloons floated up and away. What made this boating excursion different from many others is that all of the guests, 10 on each boat, were senior citizens.
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa -- According to Lyon County Attorney Carl Peterson, an 82-year-old Inwood, Iowa man charged with six counts of perjury waived his right to a hearing scheduled for Wednesday morning in Lyon County District Court. John VanGammeren was charged in mid-August with six counts of perjury in conjunction with the cold case investigation into the murder of Wilma June Nissen, whose body was discovered in a ditch several miles from VanGammeren's farm in 1978. In the paperwork relating to VanGammeren's $5,000 bond, it states he was to appear Wednesday to answer to the indictments.

John W. VanGammeren, who presented himself at the Lyon County Sheriff's Office after being subpoenaed, was questioned regarding his involvement in a cold case more than 30 years old.

WORTHINGTON -- Last week, the Buffalo Ridge Drug Task Force (BRDTF) executed a search warrant at a rural home, arresting one man, picking up another on a warrant and netting more than 31 grams of methamphetamine. Jose Isabel Rodriguez, 42, of Worthington was charged with first- and second-degree controlled substance possession, a meth-related crime involving children and possession of drug paraphernalia.
