JACKSON — A few short weeks ago, Susan Reiter wasn’t sure how much longer she was going to be able to keep Coffee Choices open. On Monday, she was marking a new beginning and a new look to her enterprise. Coffee Choices is now Ellefson Coffee Co. — as in David Ellefson, the bassist from the heavy metal band Megadeth who grew up in this southwest Minnesota community.
WORTHINGTON -- The Wednesday death of actress and singer Debbie Reynolds probably had a slightly different meaning to Gary Wagner than most other Worthington residents. Wagner, as a 10-year-old, was in the midst of an extended stay at the Valley Club Heart Hospital in Minneapolis, he shared Friday.
WORTHINGTON -- The election of Donald Trump as U.S. president certainly represented a political upheaval at the national level, but there was also some significant change locally in southwest Minnesota. In two three-way races for Worthington City Council, incumbents were defeated this past November. Additionally, a measure allowing Worthington restaurants, clubs, bowling centers and hotels to sell intoxicating liquor on Sundays passed.
WORTHINGTON — Christmas came three days later for Dottie MacNeill, but she was by no means complaining. MacNeill, a resident of South Shore Care Center in Worthington, eagerly awaits Christmas each year and always looks forward to seeing Santa Claus, explained Suzan Wellendorf, activity director at South Shore. This year, though, MacNeill wasn’t as lucky — initially, at least.
WORTHINGTON -- The sister-city relationship between Worthington and Crailsheim, Germany has lost one of its significant supporters. Hellmut Zundel, who served as Crailsheim’s mayor for many years, died on Christmas Day, former Worthington Mayor Robert J. Demuth said Wednesday. Demuth and Zundel forged a strong friendship thanks to their cities’ connection, and visited each other in their respective communities.
WORTHINGTON — Erin Makela has gotten an education pretty much wherever she’s traveled. Considering the traveling she has done, her life experience has served her well — particularly since she’s in the education field.
