WORTHINGTON -- Preaching a message of fiscal responsibility, Gov. Tim Pawlenty touted ideas for improving the state's economy and efficiency during a luncheon Thursday at the Travelodge Hotel. The event, hosted exclusively for members of the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce, was the governor's latest stop in a series of visits to Minnesota communities in recent weeks. "It's a wonderful state, not because of the politics, but because of the wonderful people," Pawlenty said, expressing confidence that Minnesota will survive its budget turbulence.

Steven Burrill, who has been involved in the growth and prosperity of the biotech-nology industry for more than 40 years, will be the keynote speaker for the conference, which will take place April 2-3 at Minnesota West Commu-nity and Technical College, Worthington campus. Burrill will speak at 8 a.m. Friday, and will also appear with Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty on his 9 a.m.
WORTHINGTON -- As the effort continues to expand bioscience-related industry throughout Minnesota, Worthington and the surrounding region has seen a key component of that growth. That's the opinion of Dale Wahlstrom, chief executive officer of the BioBusiness Alliance of Minnesota, who was in Worthington Thursday for a meeting with regional bioscience leaders.
WORTHINGTON -- If you're traveling just about anywhere in the U.S. and happen to see a long, colorful semi-trailer on the Interstate promoting plentiful benefits of a community --well, that trailer may just be unique and visually appealing enough to cause you to look up that city on the Internet. That's what Mike Smith of Smith Trucking -- as well as folks with the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Convention and Visitors Bureau -- are hoping.
WORTHINGTON -- The winds were relatively tranquil early Monday morning, and the temperature comfortable -- but both changed quickly, as blizzard conditions prevailed by afternoon across southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa. A number of schools opted to close Monday in advance of the forecasted nasty weather, and the prognosticators were right.
WORTHINGTON -- It shouldn't be hard to get in the holiday spirit in the next few days. That's because the Marketing and Business Committee of Worthington's Convention and Visitors Bureau has been working to add new ways of celebrating the Christmas season in the community.
WORTHINGTON -- Plenty of people are sure to have a ball Saturday afternoon at Prairie Elementary. That's because Prairie Rehabilitation Services of Worthington is presenting "Get On the Ball with Fun Family Fitness," a free-admission event from 1 to 5 p.m. Parents, children in kindergarten through sixth grade and adult community members are welcome to attend. The event has been coordinated as a means of raising money for the purchase of additional stability balls at Prairie Elementary.
WORTHINGTON -- With the economy ailing, there's no better time than the present to start shopping locally. That's the primary message behind a new report by Minnesota 2020, a public policy think tank chaired by former Worthington resident Matt Entenza. Purchasing Minnesota-made products gives the state's economy an added boost, said Entenza during a press event inside The Cows' Outside, a Worthington business that sells products made in Minnesota as well as under the store's own roof. "If people buy at a big-box retailer, 43 cents on the dollar stays in the community," Entenza explained.
WORTHINGTON -- Melvin and Lila Voss started out with one special Christmas tree inside Worthington Elks Lodge. Now, there are two, and the sky may be the limit. The uniquely decorated trees at the Elks are adorned with items such as mittens, socks, scarves, caps and other warm items of clothing. All are contributed to the Worthington Community Christmas Basket program, which each year offers gifts to the needy during the holiday season. "When we started out ... this is our third year ... we got a few donations from the Worthington Optimists and the Elks Lodge to start out," Melvin said.
