ROUND LAKE - The Bistro at Round Lake Vineyards & Winery is ready to open for the summer season with a new face.

New head chef Jason Battern has been hard at work creating a menu, to be ready for a Thursday grand opening. A resident full-time chef means patrons can now enjoy a more complete dining experience.

“People have wanted us to be open with a more complete restaurant menu,” owner Scott Ellenbecker said. “Jason is a big step in making our culinary experience complete. A bistro menu fits perfectly with the format of our winery. We want people to relax and enjoy their wine or beer, while munching away with friends or a significant someone.”

Battern has served as sous chef for a number of restaurants from Naples, Fla., to the Twin Cities. Most of his experience is in Italian cuisine and American bistro-style foods. Some area patrons may already be familiar with him from his culinary work in the Iowa Lakes Region, where he served as sous chef at the 1856 Emporium in Arnolds Park and then for a number of years the L’ Chiesa restaurant in Spencer.

When Battern learned of the winery’s interest in creating a year-round restaurant, he was intrigued by the proposition.

“For me, it’s a number of things,” he said, “The challenge of being in charge of a restaurant from its inception to reality is certainly an attraction, but I’m also drawn to the spaces here. There’s the event center, of course, but also the outside spaces here. I see so many possibilities.”

The Bistro’s grill will serve Wednesday thru Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday until 7 p.m.. A Bistro Fresh menu featuring sandwiches, wraps, salads and other finger food is available Monday and Tuesday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
