WORTHINGTON -- Curves members are excited about the move to a new location.

As women were working out at the fitness center last week, the excitement in their voices could be heard when asked about the new location.

Worthington's Curves has been located at 920 Third Ave. for 10 years. Owner Bev McCarvel is also looking forward to the businesses move to Northland Mall (it will be in an empty space near Vanity). The move will be completed sometime in early April.

"It's time for a change and we do need more room," said McCarvel of why she is making the move. "This Curves is actually the first Curves in Minnesota."

The current Curves has two dressing rooms. The new location at the mall will have four dressing rooms and the workout area is a bigger space.

"I'm very excited about the mall," she said. "There is a new owner out there and I'm excited to be a part of the new revitalization out there. He is working very hard to bring more people to the mall and Curves will bring more women every day to the mall."

The exercise equipment at Curves is all hydraulic, meaning there are no weights on the machines. This type of equipment is safe for all ages to use, and women ranging in age from teenagers to women in their 80s exercise at Curves. It is a 30-minute workout, completing both cardiovascular exercise and strength training,

"The economy has really affected us," McCarvel said. "I'm hoping at the mall there will be more exposure."

Last year, the Worthington business added CurvesSmart Success Coach. This program tells the exerciser if they are exercising to their full ability, how many calories are being burned and if they are in their target heart rate while they are exercising at each machine. All of the Success Coach monitors are hooked up to a computer that stores the information in a profile for each exerciser. Women can then put their card in a computer at the end and see a summary of their workout.

"What makes it different from conventional diets is we teach you how to raise your metabolism," explained McCarvel. "Over time you will then burn more calories."

The program also teaches women about vitamins and using meal replacement shakes. And Curves does sell a line of nutritional supplements.

During April and May, the local Curves will again participate in the Curves/AVON fitness study. Women can come participate in the study for 30 days for $30. After 30 days, participants can decide if they want to join Curves. During last year's fitness study, women across the U.S. lost a total of three football fields in inches and tons of pounds.

At the mall, Curves will open at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday, and the machines will be ready for use at about 7:15 a.m. It is open until 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 6 p.m. on Friday. Saturday hours are 8 to 11 a.m. For more information, call Worthington's Curves at 372-4750.
