Heron Lake youth wins cupcake contest

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Victory is sweet - literally - for an aspiring young baker.
Ryan Fauglid, 12, owon a create- a-cupcake contest put on by Oh My Cupcakes! out of Sioux Falls with his recipe for peach cobbler cupcakes. He is the son of Tony and Tammy Fauglid and will enter the seventh grade this fall.
The peach cobbler cupcakes are being sold through the month of July. More than 300 entries were submitted, and Oh My Cupcakes! founder and CEO Melissa Johnson said his stood out the most.
“I was so ecstatic when I found out I won,” Ryan said. “I got the idea because when I think of summer I think of eating fruit, and after a while I thought of cobbler, and peach cobbler is probably the most popular type.”
The cupcake is lightly spiced with a peach cobbler filling. The cupcake is then topped with freshly made whipped cream and garnished with streusel crumble.
“We had never done a peach cupcake before, and summer seemed like a really good time for a peach flavor,” Johnson said.
She said the lead baking team took all of Ryan’s components and created a recipe that they would be able to produce everyday.
According a press release from Oh My Cupcakes!, Ryan discovered his love for baking when we was 9 or 10 years old.
“Baking and cooking runs through my blood,” Ryan said. “My great uncle owns a restaurant, and my great- grandparents, according to my great-grandmother, were pastry chefs for a king and queen (in Hungary).
“Whenever I bake, I get a feeling of overwhelming joy that is hard to describe. I feel like I am meant to bake.”
Ryan said he wants to be a head baker and owner of a small-town bakery when he grows up.
“Small-town bakeries have always appealed to me,” Ryan said.
Johnson said she believes that Ryan has a bright future in baking.
“I just hope he doesn’t open up right next door,” Johnson joked.
