LaCanne Family Funeral Service breaks ground for new facility in Jackson
LaCanne is building a new Celebration of Life Center, which will include flame-based cremation, a large gathering space and a chapel in Jackson at the Jackson Crossroads.
JACKSON — LaCanne Family Funeral Service broke ground for its new 9,600-square-foot Celebration of Life Center in Jackson Thursday at Jackson Crossroads, a commercial development park on the north end of town.
The facility, which will be located at the corner of Industrial Parkway and Prospect Avenue, will include a 2,100-square-foot dining area, a chapel about that same size, an embalming room, and office space.
"People want everything in the same facility," said Joel LaCanne, who owns the business with his wife, Shannon. He said the building in Jackson will have "a nice gathering area for celebrations."
That space will have a separate entrance from the rest of the funeral home, and may also serve as a gathering place for other community events.
"It's a real dream come true, and we're really excited to get the job started," LaCanne said.
Another feature of the new Celebration of Life Center will be its flame-based crematory, which will allow LaCanne to complete its own traditional cremations. Currently the business offers alkaline hydrolysis or water-based cremation, and completes any requested flame-based cremation at a Worthington facility.
LaCanne purchased the lot from the Jackson Economic Development Corporation, a process that began before June of this year; the sale was completed last Friday, said Tom Nelson, community and business development specialist with the Community and Economic Development Association in Jackson.
“I really do think it’s a good deal for the community,” Nelson said, emphasizing the importance of small economic development projects that foster important services in town.
LaCanne anticipates hiring two to four part-time employees to staff the new building, which is set to open for business in 2022.
Near the LaCanne site in Jackson, construction began in June on a five-unit commercial building that will eventually house Cabin Coffee and Subway, with the other three spaces yet to be claimed. That project has an anticipated target completion date of March 1, Nelson said.
There are about 24 acres of commercial lots still available in the area, he added.
