WORTHINGTON - “Whereas, the citizens of Worthington now residing in South Shore and Crossroads Care Centers have contributed immeasurably to Worthington’s heritage, success and growth of our community.”
An excerpt from a formal proclamation stamped with a gold seal, Worthington Mayor Mike Kuhle declared May 14-18 as Nursing Home Week during Thursday’s patriotic party at South Shore Care Center in Worthington.
“Our nursing home residents of any age or ability are themselves living history and a precious resource,” Kuhle continued from the proclamation, urging every citizen to “honor the elderly and disabled residents of nursing homes by visiting or volunteering at a local nursing home to bring good cheer to the residents and appreciation to the staff who care for our most vulnerable citizens on our behalf.”
As has been an annual tradition, the “sister” nursing home facilities in Worthington celebrated Nursing Home Week (or National Skilled Nursing Care Week) as a way to recognize its residents and the caregivers that assist residents through their daily activities.
“It’s a celebration of our residents’ lives,” explained South Shore and Crossroads Administrator Scott Kessler of the purpose of the annual celebration.
Established by the American Health Care Association, this year’s Nursing Home Week theme was “Celebrating Life’s Stories.”
Residents of South Shore had the opportunity to share stories at Thursday’s celebration prior to hearing musical entertainment from Worthington accordionist Galen Benton.
Celebrating was not confined to Thursday afternoon. Residents at the two care centers put their own twist on celebrations throughout the week, which included anything from a balloon launch that would prompt its finder to call the care center; a salad luncheon; trivia; and time spent outdoors grilling, planting flowers and enjoying root beer floats.
