Worthington liquor store welcomes Sunday customers for first time

WORTHINGTON -- At about 11:50 a.m. Sunday, inside a dimly-lit Worthington Municipal Liquor Store, employees were preparing for something new -- greeting customers on a Sunday.

WORTHINGTON - At about 11:50 a.m. Sunday, inside a dimly-lit Worthington Municipal Liquor Store, employees were preparing for something new - greeting customers on a Sunday.

Store manager Dan Wycoff had his eye on the analog clock in front of the store’s entrance. As the clock hit 12, the lights came on, the automatic doors opened and about a dozen customers filled in to get first dibs.

Todd Recker, triumphantly, was the first customer to make a purchase, and already had a small line behind him when he finished his transaction.

A one-day sale and a free sample table may have been the reason for the noon rush. That, or customers wanted to celebrate the repeal of the state’s 159-year Sunday prohibition.

In March, Gov. Mark Dayton signed a bill allowing all liquor stores to sell liquor on Sundays. Thanks to authorization from the Worthington City Council on June 12, the store will be open every Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

The hope among Wycoff and city officials is additional sales on Sunday will do more than even out extra labor and overhead costs.

“Hopefully it’s not just taking away from Saturday or Monday, but creating additional sales by being open on Sunday,” Wycoff said.
