Lakefield’s sweet summer celebration in full swing

LAKEFIELD — “Fun for all ages” will lead to a sweet time for Lakefield-area residents and visitors alike, as this Jackson County community welcomes all for its annual Lakefield Summerfest celebration this week and weekend.

“It’s fun for the whole family — from very small to old,” Lakefield Summerfest Committee Secretary Heather Reasoner said of the week-long celebration, which kicked off Monday.

This year’s theme, Living the Sweet Life, will help the community celebrate the sweetness of small-town life and its offerings, like the recent reopening of Lakefield’s bakery and a cheesecake business.

“We’re truly living the sweet life,” Reasoner said.

The theme is also fitting, Reasoner added, as Roger Haar is the Grand Marshall. Haar previously owned the bakery, R and J Pastry, for many years.

Reasoner said the annual event is made possible by a variety of sponsors, businesses, churches and community groups.

“We have a strong community presence with the different groups and communities we have that make Lakefield great,” she said. “You can really see that with the amount of stuff we have planned for this week.”

Fun for all ages

The week-long celebration continues tonight (Wednesday), beginning at 6 p.m. with the Little Miss and Mr. Pageant, free games and the 7:30 p.m. lip sync battle, all at the North City Park.

More activities in the park continue Thursday, with the 5 p.m. picnic in the park, music, Lions bingo at 7 p.m. and late swim from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Lakefield Pool.

Activities really heat up Friday, which is dedicated to youth events, Reasoner said.

The family fun night events from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. will feature inflatables and games, hosted by the Lakefield Business Association at North City Park. In the event of inclement weather, the activities will be hosted in Immanuel Lutheran School.

“That’s an emphasis toward younger families,” Reasoner said. “After that, we’re having a town extreme scavenger hunt.”

The scavenger hunt, which is geared toward youths ages 11 to 18, will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. at North City Park. The event, sponsored by Bethlehem Church, will take participants across town and conclude around 9:30 p.m.

The VFW and Shed will each of live music Friday night beginning at 8 p.m.

“Saturday we have a whole list of things and it's for all ages,” Reasoner said.

North City Park will host the majority of Saturday’s activities, from log carving to a car show, tractor show, craft show, new taco and barbeque food trucks, wine and beer tasting, bag tournament, kids’ tractor pull and music.

A grand parade will also line the streets at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Saturday’s street dance will feature Minneota-based The Roxbury Band. The variety rock cover band will entertain a crowd from 8 p.m. to midnight at North City Park.
