WORTHINGTON - King Turkey Day 2018 will be here soon, but the buttons for the community’s 79th annual celebration have already arrived.
The theme for this year’s weekend, “North Star to the Lone Star,” is highlighted on the oval-shaped button and is a testament to the ever-strengthening bond between the communities of Worthington and Cuero, Texas, KTD Board of Directors President Terri Odell said Wednesday.
“Cuero had gotten hit by a hurricane last summer, so Worthington had come together and sent a trailer down there,” Odell said. “Then, (many from Cuero) came here to jump in a frozen lake to help with our splash pad, and brought wallets full of money to spend and to help with the Tracy Feit benefit and Keagan’s Cause.
“They raise money down there and donate here … and to me, that’s heartfelt.”
This year’s buttons were designed by Brad Behrends and have a weathered look that complements the soon-to-be-released KTD T-shirts. The buttons - and possibly the shirts, too - will be available beginning Thursday, Aug. 2 at the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce table inside the commercial building at the Nobles County Fair.
“We wanted to have the buttons earlier this year to make them available at different events,” said Odell, noting Aug. 14’s Cruisin’ Downtown Worthington as one example.
As has been the case, a purchase of a button will also get the buyer a coupon book filled with deals from businesses throughout the community.
“We also wanted people to have a lot of opportunities to use the coupons,” Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Darlene Macklin said.
This year’s button is the second with an oval shape, Odell said, and as in past years, each is assigned a number. A drawing of button numbers will take place Monday through Friday during the week of King Turkey Day, with winners receiving such items as a frozen turkey or a KTD T-shirt.
The King Turkey Day mixer is set for Thursday, Sept. 13, with more activities set for Friday night and much more set for Saturday. Among the much-anticipated highlights is the renewal of the Paycheck-vs.-Ruby Begonia Great Gobbler Gallop rivalry between Worthington and Cuero, with this year’s Paycheck team comprised of captain Wade Roesner, coach Jaime Salinas, and handlers Mike Phillips and Chad Nixon.
