Prairie Ally Outdoor Center plans open house

LUVERNE — An open house is planned from 3 to 6 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Prairie Ally Outdoor Center, 308 N. Blue Mound Ave., Luverne.

Prairie Ally is a public food forest and productive perennials riparian buffer demonstration site. Drawing on elements of agroforestry, including permaculture, the projects focus primarily on perennial plants. A variety of vegetables were also planted this season for volunteers and the community to enjoy, with an abundant harvest.

Made possible by the support of volunteers, businesses and grant awards, the projects were completed in partnership with the non-profit Project Food Forest of Sioux Falls, S.D. and the University of Minnesota Extension Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships. Four acres of the property surrounding the food forest and buffer are undergoing prairie restoration and oxbow excavation, which will provide wildlife habitat and improve water quality in the area.

The open house is hosted by University of Minnesota Extension, and will showcase and celebrate the work completed thus far and gain further community insight to continue to create a vision for the future. Refreshments will be provided, and a large variety of produce and flower seeds will be offered free to visitors.
