WINDOM — The Windom downtown square will be the place to be Thursday evening for a holiday-themed night out for the whole family.

From 5 to 8 p.m., Windom’s downtown square will be decked out with retail deals, Christmas caroling, horse carriage rides, sightings of Santa, his elves and reindeer and much more during the town’s annual Christmas by Candlelight celebration.

“Retail businesses will have deals going on, so stop in and take advantage of those and finish up your last minute shopping,” said Kate Gentry, director of the Windom Area Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event through donations by area businesses and organizations in Windom.

After shopping locally, Christmas shoppers can head to the Windom Area Chamber of Commerce, 303 Ninth St., to have their gifts wrapped by Tim the Elf for a free-will offering.

In addition to hot deals, there will be plenty of other holiday-themed fun just in time for Christmas.

Families will be able to hop on to a horse-drawn carriage for rides around the square and visit Santa’s reindeer. In addition to downtown retailers, the Cottonwood County Courthouse will also be open for guests to view its large tree with musical entertainment by a pianist.

Additionally, the Cottonwood County Historical Society will be open that night for folks to come view uniquely decorated trees by community members at the society’s “Festival of Trees.” Santa and his elves will be walking in and around the square and businesses, and American Lutheran Church will bring the Christmas carols to the square.

There will also be plenty of opportunities for kids games and entertainment. The Business Arts and Recreation Center will have free open gym for school-aged children and a coloring contest, while the Windom Public Library will host a variety of holiday-themed games.

Among locations to warm up with a hot beverage include the Windom Public Library and Windom State Theater.

Christmas by Candlelight is a growing Windom holiday tradition, one that Gentry said the chamber plans to continue to build upon.
