ROUND LAKE — Nana has a secret.

But not for much longer. A crowd will learn what Nana’s been hiding during the Grassroots Community Theatre’s upcoming July 11-13 performances of “Nana’s Naughty Knickers,” slated July 11-13, at The Greater Round Lake Community Association.

The farce by Katherine DiSavino that follows Bridget’s experiences at her nana’s New York apartment is sure to get chuckles from men and women alike.

“I laughed out loud reading the script,” said Denise Deitchman ‘Bridget’ of Lakefield. “It’s intelligently funny. There’s some great lines.”

In her first role as director, Jeri Sirovy of Jackson is leading the nine-member cast of both seasoned and rookie community actors and actresses.

There’s been a lot of moving pieces to prepare for the play, but Sirovy was up for the challenge.

“It just sounded like a fun challenge, new experiences and something I’d like to try,” she said of her decision to direct following the retirement of former director Mary Jane Mardesen.

In her debut performance, Nancy Jo Hambleton of Worthington plays the role of Nana.

“I was shocked to get a lead role,” she said. “It’s been a lot of fun.”

Hambleton spends a lot of time on stage with community theatre enthusiasts Deitchman and Cindy Teerink of Rushmore.

Teerink, who plays Vera, said the play is very well cast.

“What I liked about auditioning is that it felt like the voices were perfect,” said Teerink, who frequently performs in community plays around the area. “The casting is just spot on.”

The ‘spot on’ cast will be complemented by a unique set, which has members excited to reveal to an audience. Much of the set was built by Round Lake residents Ron Strike and Tom Wiese and Rushmore's Mardesen, with select props provided by The Greater Round Lake Community Association.

Sirovy said what’s been so fun about preparing for the play is the opportunity to get to meet other people from the area.

“I have people from other theaters that I stay in touch with,” she said. “Everybody has that core interest that they share. They’re not afraid of taking that risk. These people have that whole sense of ‘go for it’ and I enjoy it so much.”

Other cast members include: Cec Burchill, Sandy Slone, Lon Standafer and John Widboom, all of Worthington; Rob Simmermon, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Jessica Hieronimus, Rushmore.

Crew members are Slone, Mardesen, Amy Stefferud of Reading and Elaine Hay, Worthington. Costumer is DeAnna Shaikoski of Fairmont with additional help from cast members.

The curtain will draw at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the The Greater Round Lake Community Association (former Round Lake-Brewster High School gymnasium in Round Lake). Thursday’s performance will include dessert and Friday’s popcorn.

A dinner theatre catered by On Q BBQ will begin at 6 p.m. July 13 with the final performance to follow.

Main dish options include pork loin or oven-baked chicken.

Tickets may be purchased at HyVee in Worthington. Or, call 360-0733 or 478-4474 to secure seating.
