BOARD WORK SESSION September 10, 2020
A board work session of the School Board of Independent School District No. 518, Worthington, Minnesota, was held at the Worthington High School Media Center at 1211 Clary Street, Worthington, Minnesota on September 10, 2020, at 7:30 a.m.
The following were present: BOARD MEMBERS – Lori Dudley, Linden Olson, Brad Shaffer, Joel Lorenz, Steve Schnieder, Mike Harberts, Adam Blume
ADMINISTRATORS – John Landgaard, Superintendent, Dave Skog, Director of Management Services
Motion by Member Schnieder, and seconded by Member Dudley and unanimously passed to approve the agenda for the September 10, 2020, School Board Work Session.
The Work Session started out with the discussion on the future direction of space options for Community Education, Department of Teaching and Learning, Special Education, the District Office and the Technology Department.
Two options were discussed. Option one is construction of a new facility attached to the existing Learning Center out on the Crailsheim property or option two renovation of an existing building within the community.
A suggestion was made in obtaining public opinion on what the district is thinking about doing to resolve the space issues.
The board discussed option one, which is the construction of a new facility attached to the existing Learning Center building. The board discussed the pros and cons of option one. The new facility would have the capacity to house only ECFE and Community Education because of the limitations of costs and space but has the possibility of future expansion. The idea of a new facility goes along with the long-term board vision of creating a campus on the West side of the community.
The board discussed option two, which is a renovation of an existing building in the community. The board indicated that the two items that need to be addressed before the board could even consider option two would be to talk to the city on their vision of the existing piece of property and a negotiated price of the existing property.
Also discussed was the long-range vision of the district’s programs and timetable.
Board members showed interest in taking a tour of the existing building.
Work session adjourned at 8:38 a.m.
