What is the sound Minnesotans make instead of saying ‘oops’ or ‘excuse me’?
Ian Redmond recently had a bit of an epiphany: Minnesotans, it dawned on him, don’t say “excuse me.”
“Over the holidays, I had a realization that Minnesotans have a certain sound they make instead of just saying ‘excuse me,'” Redmond, of Duluth’s MIX 108, wrote on the radio station’s blog.
“Have you ever noticed you or some around saying ‘ope’ instead of ‘oops’ or ‘excuse me’?” he said. “I just find it so fascinating, like it’s engraved in Minnesotans DNA to say ‘ope.’ Now that my cousin from Georgia made me realize it, I can’t stop noticing it wherever I go.”
