WORTHINGTON - If there’s a maxim by which local builder/landscaper/concrete professional Allen Drost abides, it may be this: Whenever possible, keep it local and trust family.
That principled approach has stood Allen in good stead. He’s a firm believer in supporting local labor, suppliers and vendors of all sorts because of the mutual benefits that result, and when his projects come to fruition, there’s one local realtor who always has his back: His mother, Virginia Drost, of RE/MAX Premier Realty, Worthington.
“We always try to keep everything local,” said Allen. “And I know my mother believes in what I build and markets it well.”
Currently, the Drosts are high on the area’s condominium market. Along with partner Dan Krueger, proprietor of Ideal Landscaping, Allen is primed to develop up to eight more lots on First Avenue just south of Prairie Elementary.
“Condos seem pretty popular in Worthington,” observed Virginia. “And their resale is huge.
“The housing market in general is really starting to pick up as spring returns.”
The appeal of condos, which the Drosts say are particularly attractive to the 50-plus demographic, is their promise of largely maintenance-free living and versatility as residents age.
“Ours are designed with zero-entry access - no steps at the front door, garage or out to the patio,” noted Allen.
Although each of the two condos that are move-in ready and for sale at Allen’s First Avenue site has one full bathroom with a conventional tub, the master bedrooms’ three-quarter baths offer step-in showers with built-in seats.
And for empty-nesters who remain extremely active and able-bodied, condos offer greater freedom for travel and other leisure pursuits, as lawn care and snow removal are handled by the condo association and are not the responsibility of residents.
“It’s definitely a lower maintenance lifestyle that allows people more time for themselves,” endorsed Allen.
Allen and Virginia delight in walking clients through the existing condos, pointing out pleasing design elements like vaulted or “tray” (inset with crown molding) ceilings that add to the spacious feel of the open-floor plan space.
Living, dining and kitchen areas flow from one to the other, and abundant daylight splashes in through Vector brand windows, which are manufactured in Fergus Falls.
The two-bedroom units provide a convenient laundry room plus a full bathroom with tub, as previously mentioned. Each master bedroom suite boasts a three-quarters bath and a roomy walk-in closet.
The bathrooms have Onyx sinks, and Joens Woodworking of Wilmont crafted the oak cabinetry that is seen throughout each unit. Additional features are granite kitchen countertops, stainless Frigidaire appliances, LED lighting and easy maintenance, high-end waterproof laminate flooring in the common living spaces.
“And there’s a five-year tax abatement in effect for these units, so that’s another big benefit for buyers,” said Allen.
Allen, who has added construction to his concrete and landscaping businesses over the past decade, also has room for more condos and single-family homes at his property abutting the Great Life golf course and Crailsheim Drive, and he can build to suit.
In addition, Allen plans to break ground on two additional, 1,550 square-foot, three-bedroom condos - one is already pre-sold, the other is available for purchase - at the First Avenue site this spring.
“I’m optimistic about the timing for building,” said Allen. “These are both great locations, with easy access to the recreational trail, and it’s a good time generally to look at what’s available and make a move.”
“It’s the right time of year to be buying,” she asserted. “We’re happy to sit down to explain the options, and we can guide clients through the whole process, from the showing to the inspection to the closing-until it’s a done deal.”
This is one mother/son team that supports not only the local economy but each other.
