WORTHINGTON - Ready for a hearty laugh after a long, tiresome winter?
Then the place for you this Friday evening is Memorial Auditorium Performing Arts Center (MAPAC), where the national touring company of Chicago’s famed Second City Comedy Club will entertain all comers.
“I saw a Second City show during a visit to Chicago, and I was so impressed and I laughed so hard that, at the end, I took the time to inquire if they toured,” said Tammy Makram, managing director of MAPAC.
“The answer was yes, and I decided it would be fun to bring them to Worthington.”
Hence, six performers/comedians are set to entertain locally at 8 p.m. Friday. Be forewarned that some adult language and humor may be in play, but attendees are guaranteed to exit into the spring-like evening with smiles on their faces.
“It’s a chance for a little escape and a lot of belly laughs,” assured Makram.
The Second City Comedy Show has been a hit in Chicago for nearly 60 years. Given that a high percentage of Second City alumni (including Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Dan Akroyd, Jim Belushi and Steve Carell) go on to become recognizable performers in TV and movies, there’s a good chance you’ll be witness to the next generation of well-known entertainers.
“This is an opportunity for people not only to have a super night out but also to see a professional comedy troupe full of potential future stars,” said Makram.
What the audience can expect are legendary sketches and improv comedy, because the tour’s title is “The Best of Second City.”
“We’ll see the very best sketches Second City has to offer,” said Makram. “And of course their trademark improvisational work will be on full display.”
The same touring troupe performing in Worthington this week has upcoming shows in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Illinois, Michigan and Colorado, so Makram is providing a unique opportunity for southwest Minnesota residents to enjoy the type of satire and humor that Chicagoans - and those in bigger cities - can sample on a regular basis.
Encouraged Makram, “If you’re feeling a need to get out and laugh, I hope to see you here Friday night.”
Fishin’ with Olives featuring local favorite Tommy Binford will be playing in the lobby for the social hour before the show. Round Lake Winery will be selling wine and beer.
“The Best of Second City” takes place at 8 p.m. Friday at Memorial Auditorium Performing Arts Center, 714 13th St., Worthington.
