FULDA -- The future looks brighter in Fulda School District 505 after voters Tuesday approved a new operating referendum for their district.
The 10-year, $2,300 per pupil referendum passed by a count of 495 (55 percent) to 400. Voters were able to cast ballots from 5 to 8 p.m. last night, as well as mail ballots. Hand-counting began Tuesday evening and wasn’t completed as of press time.
Impacts to district residents vary by property value. For property valued at $50,000, for example, the tax impact would be $352 in 2016; for a $100,000 property, taxes would be $704; and for a $200,000 property would be taxed $1,408 in 2016.
In an interview with the Daily Globe last month, Fulda Superintendent Luther Onken said the requested referendum was only for operating costs.
“We’re not building, we’re not expanding, not doing anything other than just to maintain,” Onken said in a Nov. 20 Daily Globe article.
Onken added that based on the current enrollment of 340 students, a failed referendum would have meant cuts of $760,000-plus.
“As far as staffing (cuts), it would be tough,” Onken said in November. “Roughly about 73 percent of our budget is for personnel - salaries. If you’re going to have to find that kind of reduction, that’s where it would be.”
