SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Dakotas Chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI) is hosting its 2016 conference, “The Business of Writing and Illustrating,” on June 11 at the Holiday Inn City Center in Sioux Falls. Optional workshops will be offered on June 10.

The conference is for writers, illustrators, and anyone interested in creating children’s and young adult books or magazine articles.

Friday workshop presenters include Marilyn Kratz and Sara Werner. Kratz, a native of Yankton, S.D., will lead a workshop on writing for children’s magazines. Kratz has six published books and over 700 magazine stories, articles, columns and poems to her credit. Werner is a senior content strategist with Click Rain in Sioux Falls. She will guide participants through the process of building a website. By workshop’s end, they will have begun creating their own websites.

Saturday conference speakers include Julie Gassman, editor at Capstone, who will discuss work-for-hire opportunities for writers; Nathan Gassman, Creative Director at Capstone, who will offer work-for-hire ideas for illustrators that will broaden their portfolios and attract publishers; and Rebecca Glaser, an Associate Publisher at Amicus Publishing, will provide an insider’s look at picture book publishing. All three have Dakota roots. Danielle Smith, an agent with Red Fox Literary, will Skype about issues related to finding and working with a literary agent. Critiques and consultations are available for those who register by May 9.
