OKABENA - The Brewster Fire and Rescue and Heron Lake Fire departments responded to a house fire Monday afternoon at 86806 340th Ave., west of Okabena.

Brewster Fire Chief John Garmer said the unoccupied, empty two-story farm house was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived on the scene. They were dispatched at 3:35 p.m. after a passerby noticed the blaze.

“The flames were through the roof of half of the house already,” Garmer said of the scene when his department arrived. He suspected the cause of the fire to be electrical.

Approximately 20 firefighters from the Brewster department were assisted by tanker support from the Heron Lake Fire Department.

The crew spent approximately three hours at the scene.

“We’re just about ready to clear,” Garmer said just before 7 p.m.

Monday afternoon’s weather conditions - mostly cloudy with occasional wind gusts - worked in the firefighters’ favor.

“It was a nice day to fight a fire,” Garmer said.
